ERPNext and Smart Invoice compliance for Zambian businesses
Since October 2024, input VAT in Zambia lives or dies by Smart Invoice. We integrate ERPNext with ZRA through the VSDC channel and build the finance controls that keep your claims defensible.
The Smart Invoice mandate
ZRA Smart Invoice is mandatory for all VAT-registered taxpayers, covering VAT, turnover tax, rental income, insurance premium levy, tourism levy and local excise, with ERP integration through the Virtual Sales Data Controller.

Read the case studyFrequently asked questions
Is Smart Invoice mandatory for my business?
If you are VAT-registered in Zambia, yes, since 1 July 2024, with penalties enforced from 1 October 2024. Smart Invoice also covers turnover tax, rental income, insurance premium levy, tourism levy and local excise, so many non-VAT businesses are in scope too.
Can ERPNext integrate with ZRA Smart Invoice?
Yes. ZRA explicitly supports ERP integration through the Virtual Sales Data Controller, which bridges a Certified Invoicing System to Smart Invoice in real time. We deliver that VSDC integration on ERPNext as an engineering service, with queueing and retry patterns proven in our KRA eTIMS module.
What happens to input VAT if my suppliers are not on Smart Invoice?
You cannot claim it. Since October 2024, input VAT and deductions are only allowed on invoices generated within Smart Invoice and validated with a Mark ID and QR code. Supplier compliance is now your cash-flow problem, which is why our purchase workflows verify before payment.
Do you support NAPSA and NHIMA deductions?
Yes. Payroll Africa computes PAYE, NAPSA and NHIMA on every Salary Slip natively in Frappe HR. Zambia is a provisioned Tier-1 country in the 54-country statutory engine, and rates are maintained in settings so changes apply without redeployment.
